Bangladesh Proposes Higher Import Duty on Used Cars

In the proposed budget for the 2008-09 fiscal year (FY) the government has suggested the following:

  • 20 per cent SD (Supplementary Duty) on vehicles of up to 1500cc
  • 60 per cent SD on vehicles between 1,501 and 2,350cc
  • 100 per cent SD on vehicles between 2,351cc and 3,500cc.

This rates are only applied to used, also called reconditioned, cars. It may change before the budget is put into effect as the Bangladesh Reconditioned Vehicles Importers and Dealers Association (BARVIDA) argues it should be reduced.

BARVIDA believes that raise the taxes on reconditioned car imports will hold back the current progress the economy is experiencing. The connection is that many small and medium businesses rely on the cheaper used car imports to do their business. We will have to see what comes as most vehicles imported come from Japan.

    Hi, guys

Just can’t answer to all your questions, I will just explain briefly, Also I’m just as u guys not an expert to answer to all your needs, I know how it’s feels like not getting any reply from these guys.
I also wanted to import 1 of my vehicle from uk , so i called few import guys in bangladesh, they did encoranged me to bring it in, so they can loot me in custome somehow, so i realised and stoped.
one day a bangladeshi guy walked in to my office asking for job vacancies in the past he was one of the custome guy in banglades, after talking with him regarding import policy in bagladesh he adviced me if I import from here to bg the custome charge will be the vehicle value cost in bangladesh. It dosen’t matter if the car is reconditioned but custome will always charge as new purchased vehicle not even a book price, and the vehicle can’t be more then 4yrs old.Just emagine how much you would be paying if you are importing 4X4 06/07 plate BMW X5.
    Not worthit guys.

Im really Intrested in taking one to bangladesh but nobody Gives you the exact inside Information! i Know someone who did Research for 6 months to Take his car bangladesh , Everyone said There’s no tax For personal Use, so He shipped the Car From the Uk , Mercedes C-Class on a 2003 Plate , When it arrived in bangladesh, They demanded tax, he had all paperwork under his Name ect.. And they still demanded Nearly £30,000 Thousand pounds Tax! SO he didn’t bother and Eventually left the car , So if anyone Knows any inside Information Can you let me Know On my email adress : tyson123@fsmail.net!

  41. james Says:

I know the situation is complex about exporting car to bangladesh, only for personal use you can take your car to bd without tax and you have to give legal commitment to re-export it after your use. you cannot sell it there. no matter how old the car or what origin you can take it. But also one this you can take for 1 year very easy as temporary entry, but in every case you have to be foreign passport holder.

  42. khayer Says:

    Hi everyone.

as titu said talking to a brick wall will get you a reply on nothing.

unfortunately there is no way around getting your cars in .
    ignore juhel as:

    1. take your car for personal use and the duty and handling will be three times the price of your vehicle.

    2. they will strip your car sensless to add further frustration, this is done in the name of so called national security .

    3. once car given back to you it will require work doing to it as the people handling the car will have no idea how to treat any other car apart from a toyota.

    4. oh forgot the costums will pretend if you give them a few thousand tks under the table they will make it dead easy for you to drive off only to realise he was a nobody and will pass you to the next officer and go off!

5.car has to be 4 yrs or younger.

    6. bottom line for example a £5000 pound car will cost you about £22000
YES I reapeat a whopping £22000. mr juhel will pretend to help you but he a big bad wolf you see. he wants your money people.

I took a car once only to pay to have it disposed at the port as it would cost me less to dispose it then send it back to the uk or get it through the customs.

and majority of the cases thats what happens to everyone who dreams to drive in style in bdesh. it never happens.

The cheapest way around is as a matter of fact.
Strip the car into peices and post part by part via courrier. that is the cheapest way only problem is finding a good mechanic after.lol

    hope this helps.

    • Jakir Says:

      Hi

I think people are being misled here.

A Carnet de Passages en Douane (CPD) is a customs document that identifies a driver’s motor vehicle. It is required in order to take a foreign registered (namely U.S. and U.K.) vehicle into Bangladesh temporarily (maximum period allowed is 1 year) – this is what EVERYBODY is doing at the moment – using this process.

The Carnet allows travellers to temporarily import their vehicles without having to leave a cash deposit at the border. It is, in essence, an international guarantee for payment of customs duties and taxes to a government should the vehicle not be re-exported from that country, following expiry of the Carnet. Persons who temporarily import their vehicles into countries where the Carnet is required must agree to obey the laws and regulations of that country and particularly the conditions of temporary importation – no sale/no lease/no commercial use.

The Carnet contains relevant information about the vehicle – make, model, colour, engine capacity, seating capacity, registration number, owner and value.

In order to obtain a Carnet, the owner of a vehicle is required to provide a security based on the age and market value of the vehicle. Generally three types of security are acceptable from motoring organisations:

      – Cash bond – where the owner of the vehicle deposits a cash guarantee
      – Bankers guarantee – issued by all major high street banks in the UK
      – Insurance policy – currently being provided by RL Davison in the UK

In the UK, carnets are issued by the RAC – yes, the breakdown people.

You don’t need to go ‘through’ anyone to ship your vehicle to Bangladesh – just contact the RAC, apply for and obtain a carnet, give them some form of guarantee in one of 3 forms described above – find a shipping company and ship it to Chittagong/Mongla. Approximately 6 weeks later Use the carnet to release the vehicle, free of taxes or duty, at the other end – that’s effectively it.

Oh yes, no rules or restrictions on age/type/country of manufacture of the vehicle – as it’s a temporary, duty free import none of these conditions apply.

        dear mr jakir,

  64. Ashiq Says:

Hi there,I just want to know what is the Procedure to import a single car like Toyota Prado 2010-2011 for personal use & how much time it will take to get the car.

  65. Ali miah Says:

People innore that juel, jewel, juhel guy. he is a con. He just wants to rob your car. its not free to take your car to Bd even if its personal use. you still have to pay duty.

Iv done that stuff and felt the pain.

  66. Ali miah Says:

When i was last in desh last year i had an x5 waiting to clear customs as a personal use car ( i knew id get taxed some how ) and had a pajaro that i wanted to sell. i was ready to pay a bit of cash for the pajaro but thought my X5 would be free!!!!! how wrong i was. Had to pay over 50K!!!!!! on the x5 alone and another 30 on the pajaro!!

Wile i was there i went to the port 6 times from sylhet. i was told i have 3 options. send it back, leave it, or something like we will look after it untill you have the money ready ( but at a huge fee ).

i paid for the pajaro, sold it ( i was back in England by that time ) and asked someone to get the x5 from port. couldnt be done as i had to be there (should of known) next flight to desh and guess what my x5 was not there. They first told me i was lying and no x5 has been in port for the last 6months, then i told em it was a few months ago only and i was assured my car would be here. After a load of bull i was told they get rid of cars left at port by importer.

I asked to see the port holding bay and told em i was not leaving untill i checked the whole port. long story short police was called (to arrest me but i they understood why i was angry) and i DID get to check the holing bay with police escort. My car was no where.

none of my questioned got answered after that by the port people. i did see around 10 car that did not get claimed.

All these cars get robbed the corrupt officals. someone in desh right now is driving my X5, and someone in desh has made profit from me!!!!!!!

    • mohammed Says:

Mr Ali miah please keep us informed as to what actions you have taken to get your X5 back. please fight your corner until you see the light. dont give up so that those corrupt people understand that there is no room for misbehave.
      good luck

    • Jakir Says:

Hi Suman – I’m afraid you won’t be able to clear your vehicle from either Mongla or Chittagong ports using the carnet process anymore. Due to abuse of the process the Customs Authorities have placed a hold on vehicles being imported under carnet (duty free temporary import). However, if you drive your vehicle to Bangladesh, via the Indian border – you will be able to get in using the carnet. This is one possible way of bringing your vehicle to Bangladesh under the carnet process at the moment.

      Regards Jakir

I have Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 2010 model and TXL – 2700 cc trim in Saudi Arabia, which I bought @ 20 Lakh Taka (equivalent in Saudi Riyal). If I want to bring this car in Bangladesh after 5 years of use, how much duty I have to pay for this please? How much depreciation I can show? i.e. I want to know how duty will be calculated while I shall bring this SUV in BD. Will appreciate your help.
    Regards
    Saimon

    • Jakir Says:

Hi Saimon, sorry for the late reply. I don’t think it would be wise to use any of the ports for carnet for the time being. Given the current situation and the Bangladeshi Governments stance on carnet (due to abuse of the process – people have been selling carnet vehicles and the authorities are aware of this), you will risk your vehicle being retained by the port authorities and demands of large sums of money. Best to enter Bangladesh by road from a neighbouring country. Although the carnet rules dictate that the vehicle must return to their country of origin no later than one year, there is no effective enforcement of this process in Bangladesh at the moment.

You drive your vehicle to Bangladesh, via the Indian border – you must carry carnet cover(Yellow Colour)from the day you depart from uk via dover. it would be long hard drive.Once you are in bangladesh. you will not think of driving back again. You will reship your jeep via ctg but before that your jeep will be use for months by ctg port officials until such time it can not be driven any more. As soon as it arrives in the uk, you then surrender the carnet to RAC for the refund of your £49000(1993). That journey you will remember rest of your life. Good luck
